CVE-2026-9967: Out of bounds write in GPU in Google Chrome prior to 148

Out of bounds write in GPU in Google Chrome prior to 148.0.7778.216 allowed a remote attacker to potentially perform a sandbox escape via a crafted HTML page. (Chromium security severity: High)

Synopsis

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the GPU component of Google Chrome (versions prior to 148.0.7778.216) allows a remote attacker to trigger a sandbox escape by luring a user to a crafted HTML page. The attack is reachable over the network, requires no authentication, but does require the victim to visit a malicious page. Successful exploitation gives the attacker full read, write, and execution capabilities outside the browser sandbox, enabling remote code execution on the host. A patched-image rebuild at version 148.0.7778.216 is available on HarborGuard for environments running an affected version.

HarborGuard Coverage

Detection

Detection is available across every HarborGuard environment: the CVE is ingested from upstream feeds within minutes of publication and matched against customer images in connected registries and CI/CD pipelines, including custom-built images that bundle Chrome or Chromium.

Available
Triage

HarborGuard surfaces this CVE with its CVSS v3.1 score of 9.6 (Critical) and weights it against each environment's compliance policy, then routes the finding to the appropriate team inbox within the customer organization.

Available
Patch

A patched-image rebuild at Chrome 148.0.7778.216 becomes available on HarborGuard for any image found to bundle an affected version. For customers with auto-remediation enabled, HarborGuard triggers the rebuild, runs a regression test suite against the new image, and opens a pull request against affected workloads.

Exploit Conditions

  • Network reachabilityRequired

The attacker delivers the exploit over the network by directing the victim to a remotely hosted crafted HTML page.

  • AuthenticationNot required

No account or credential is needed on the target system; any unauthenticated remote attacker can attempt the exploit.

  • Victim interactionRequired

The victim must visit or be redirected to the attacker-controlled HTML page, making social engineering or malvertising the primary delivery vector.

  • Attack complexityDetail

Attack complexity is low, meaning the exploit is reliable and does not depend on race conditions, specific memory layouts, or other environmental factors.

Blast Radius

  • The attacker escapes the Chrome browser sandbox and gains code execution in the context of the host OS process.
  • High confidentiality impact: the attacker reads files, credentials, session tokens, and other data accessible to the browser process and beyond.
  • High integrity impact: the attacker writes to or modifies files, registry entries, or persistent storage outside the browser.
  • High availability impact: the attacker can crash or terminate host-level processes, rendering the system or dependent services unavailable.

How HarborGuard Handles This

Available on HarborGuard: detection fires within minutes of CVE publication for any image in a customer registry or pipeline that bundles a Chrome or Chromium build older than 148.0.7778.216. For customers with auto-remediation enabled, HarborGuard queues a rebuild at the patched version, runs a regression pass, and opens a pull request against affected workloads; median time from CVE publication to merged patch PR for critical-severity issues is around 90 minutes in environments with auto-remediation enabled. Where compliance policy requires manual approval, the finding is routed immediately to the designated team inbox with the CVSS 9.6 score and full vector context attached. Because this bug enables a full sandbox escape with remote code execution potential, network-policy controls that restrict outbound connections from containers running Chrome (for example, headless browser workloads) are a useful compensating control while a rebuild is being reviewed.
